  • Description

A bomb severely damaged a Negro church in Birmingham, Alabama Sunday (15 September) and killed four young Negro girls who were attending a Sunday School class.

The explosion occurred shortly before 10:30 in the morning. Police say the impact indicated that at least 15 sticks of dynamite were used. The blast shattered windows and blew a gaping hole in the wall of the church.

The bombing set off racial disorders in which two young Negro boys were shot to death and more than 20 persons were injured. Governor George Wallace ordered 300 state troopers into the city to help local police maintain order.

One of the Negro boys was killed accidentally by a policeman with a shotgun. The boy was among a group that had been throwing stones at white persons in automobiles. The other boy was shot and killed while riding a bicycle just outside Birmingham.

Sunday evening five fires broke out in the city. Authorities say it is probably that at least four of the fires were set deliberatley.
