  • Description

The United Nations Delegation of the People's Republic of China held its first United Nations reception on Tuesday night, shortly after the Chief Delegate, Deputy Foreign Minister Chiao Kuan-hua, had taken his seat in the Security Council for the first time.

Some 325 people attended the reception, representing delegations from a large number of U.N. member nations. Japan, Australia and New Zealand were not invited, apparently because of their support for Taiwan in the earlier debates.

The United States was represented by Ambassador George Bush -- the United States having been invited "as a courtesy to the U.N.'s host country", according Chinese sources.

SYNOPSIS: At the United Nations on Tuesday, the Chief Delegate of the Chinese People's Republic, Deputy Foreign Minister Chiao Kuan-hua, welcomed guests to the first reception given by the delegation at the United Nations. Earlier in the day, Mr. Chiao had taken his seat for the first time in the Security Council.

The reception lasted two hours and included a buffet meal. About 325 people attended, including members of many U.N. delegations. Japan, Australia and New Zealand were not invited, apparently because of their support for Taiwan in the China debate
Permanent representative Huang Hua stood beside Mr. Chiao during the formalities, with chief spokesman Kao Liang on the other side of the Chinese flag.

The United States was briefly represented at the reception by U.N. Ambassador George Bush. Chinese sources said the invitation had been extended to him as a courtesy to the host country of the United Nations. The reception took place in a cordial atmosphere, and the Chinese hosts seemed relaxed and at ease, despite the hard work the delegation's members are reported to have been putting in since their arrival at the United Nations.
