  • Description

SIX MEN RETURNED TO TRISTAN DA CUNHA RECENTLY - ELEVEN MONTHS AFTER A VOLCANIC ERUPTION FORCED THEM TO LEAVE THEIR ISLAND HOME AND LIVE IN BRITAIN. EXCLUSIVE FILM SHOWS THE ADVANCE PARTY DISEMBARKING FROM THE FRIGATE "PUMA", LANDING, AND THEIR JOYFUL REUNION WITH THE ANIMALS ON TRISTAN.

ACCOMPANYING THEM WAS MR. STABLEFORD, A COLONIAL OFFICE REPRESENTATIVE, WHO WAS TO REPORT ON POSSIBILITIES OF THE 270 ISLANDERS RETURNING HOME. ON HIS RETURN TO CAPETOWN LAST MONDAY HE TOLD REPORTERS: "THERE WAS NO ACTIVITY FROM THE VOLCANO WHILE I WAS ON THE ISLAND. THE SULPHUR IN THE CRATER IS STILL HOT IN SOME PARTS AND THERE IS SOME SMOKE, BUT I MANAGED TO WALK IN THE CRATER WITHOUT WORRYING".

MR STABLEFORD WAS RELUCTANT TO MAKE ANY STATEMENT WHICH MIGHT PREJUDICE THE COLONIAL OFFICE DECISION. BUT HE SAID THERE IS ENOUGH CATTLE ON TRISTAN TO PROVIDE FOR THE ISLANDERS' NEEDS. THERE WAS ALSO PLENTY OF FISH IN THE SEA, APPARENTLY UNAFFECTED BY THE ERUPTION, AND THE GRASS "WAS GROWING BEAUTIFULLY".

HE SAID THE SIX ISLANDERS, WHO WERE STILL ON TRISTAN, HAD DONE A GREAT DEAL OF TIDYING UP IN THE SETTLEMENT, CLEANING HOUSES, MENDING WALLS AND FENCES AND PLANTING POTATOES. "WE ALSO CLEANED OUT THE LITTLE CHURCH AND HELD SERVICES EVERY SUNDAY MORNING WHILE I WAS THERE."
