Britain's W. Tom Misson 28, won the nine-nation 100-kilometre walking marathon, held this year at Seregno, in the Como Region, North Italy, November 2. The tough tussle jogged along mostly in teaming rain. Fans, and officials on bicycles, spent most of the time under umbrellas.
It was a day of triumph for Britain. For Misson it was his second successive win. His time: 9 hours four minutes 48 seconds. Second and third placings went to D. Thompson and G. Chaplin both of Britain.
Misson was greeted, as he breasted the tape, with a cloud of soaring pigeons, set free a local club, to celebration the victor's achievement.
The event - most years in the past 40 - is one of the toughest of its kind.
Participating nations: Britain, Denmark, France, Luxemburg, Holland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Italy.
