MUZOREWA: "Lately I have noticed there exists a misconception in the international world regarding political reality in Zimbabwe This is the belief that the UANC is a harmless mass organisation devoid of any power to fight against the minority regime in Zimbabwe. Because of this misconception there has been, there has emerged the notion. that only the Patriotic Front has fighting forces and therefore the Patriotic Front must be appeased in Zimbabwe.

This is a very dangerous notion. The majority of guerillas are not loyal to Nkomo and Mugabe. These comrades (INDISTINCT) (will support a government elected by the people of Zimbabwe on the basis of one man one vote. After all they gave their lives for that purpose and not for individuals."

CHINAMANO: "We shall resume talks when Dr. Owen visits Africa in the nearest future. The so called internal settlement is a waste of time. Our problem here has long been internationalised and militarised. And no backdoor settlements with puppet African organisations is possible. The painful fact has to be faced bravely. The whole political struggle is coloured wit h burning and fighting...burning and fighting with no solution at all. Now those of us who have gone through the mill are not alarmed at all. We will continue to keep the torch burning. Mr. Smith will ban...he may ban us; individuals or together, he will not ban the spirit of the people."

Background: In Salisbury, the Vice President of the Africa National Congress Zimbabwe, Mr. Josiah Chinamano said on Monday (22 August) he was prepared to negotiate the future of black forces with those of the white-minority Smith Government as part of a constitutional settlement. He said he did not believe the problem was insurmountable.

The question of security forces in Rhodesia has been a problem in the negotiations for a political settlement. Mr. Chinamano rejected any plans for an internal settlement.

Meanwhile in London, the Rhodesian nationalist leader Bishop Abel Muzorewa who's been having talks with the British Foreign Secretary Dr. David Owen warned on Tuesday (23rd August) that the Bishop's movement would wreck any peace proposals which did not have as it basis the one man, one vote principle.

SYNOPSIS: The Bishop was speaking to reporters shortly before flying back to Rhodesia.

But in Salisbury, Mr Chinamano of the ANCZ said no settlement was possible with puppet African organisation.
