INTRODUCTION: A meeting of the International Olympic Committee - the IOC -opened in the Ivory Coast capital, Abidjan, on Sunday (27 March). African delegates at the meeting were seeking approval for the Olympic suspension of meeting maintaining sporting links with South Africa.
SYNOPSIS: This is the first time that the IOC have held their week-long conference in Africa. A number of resolutions table for discussion were aimed against racial discrimination in sports. The Africans also want South Africa's sporting friends to be suspended from various other international federations. Nigeria's Abrahim Ordia, President of the Supreme Council of Sport in Africa, was proposing on of the anti-South African resolutions.
Italian representative Giulio onesti was elected President of the General Assembly of National Olympic Committees. The General Assembly meeting will prepare for a full gathering of the IOC's Executive Committee later in the year.
