  • Description

MALAWI'S ANNUAL TOBACCO AUCTION, NOW IN PROGRESS AT LIMBE, IS BEING ATTENDED BY MANY OVERSEAS REPRESENTATIVES WHO NORMALLY DUTY AT THE RHODESIAN TOBACCO AUCTIONS IN SALISBURY. PRICES AT THE OPENING OF THE MALAWI SALES ON TUESDAY WERE ABOUT TWO PENCE A POUND DOWN ON LAST YEAR'S PRICES, BUT THE QUALITY OF THE LEAF OFFERED ON TUESDAY WAS MUCH LOWER.

THE MALAWI TOBACCO INDUSTRY IS OPTIMISTIC THAT THE COUNTRY'S FLUE-CURED CROP IS GOING TO SHOW A GAIN AS A RESULT OF BUYERS SUPPORTING THE BAN PLACED ON RHODESIAN TOBACCO SALES AS PART OF THE ECONOMIC SANCTIONS IMPOSED BY BRITAIN AND MOST OTHER COUNTRIES FOLLOWING RHODESIA'S UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. HOWEVER, THE FLUE-CURED CROP FORMS ONLY A SMALL PART OF MALAWI'S TOTAL CROP OF SOME 24,000,000 POUNDS WEIGHT.

THE BULK OF MALAWI'S TOBACCO CROP IS DARK-FIRED LEAF, OF WHICH LITTLE IS GROWN IN RHODESIA. AS A RESULT, THE GAINS TO MALAWI'S ECONOMY AT THE EXPENSE OF RHODESIA WILL REMAIN MARGINAL.
