    Three children, one clutching school-books he had been carrying when the earthquake struck the village of Ghir, in Southern Iran on Monday, were found alive today (Wednesday) by rescue workers.

    But as this film, shot by Iran television on Tuesday shows, most of the people found by rescue workers in the shattered remains of the village, were dead.

    Nearly a thousand of the four thousand victims of the earthquake died at Ghir. The village had only 3,300 inhabitants. Many had left their homes to work or pray before the major shock struck in the early morning, reducing the entire village to rubble.

    Forty-four other towns and villages int he area were damaged to varying degrees. But the Iranian authorities say they have the situation in hand and do not require international relief. The Prime Minister, Mr. Hoveida, said after visiting the disaster area that more secure homes would be built in future.
