Athletics...and Renaldo Nehemiah and Greg Foster dead-heated and set a new world record of six point nine five seconds in the sixty-yard high hurdles on Friday (19 January) at the Philadelphia Track Classic meeting in the United States. Steve Riddick set a meet record of six point one six seconds in the sixty-yard dash final. Billy Olson, of Abilene, won the pole vault, scoring fewer misses at seventeen feet than world indoor-record holder Mike Tully. And Kenyan-born Wilson Waigwa narrowly won the invitational mile from Suleiman Nyambui.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting was at Philadelphia's Spectrum stadium. The sixty-yard hurdles was electronically timed. Nehemiah, from Maryland, and Foster, of U.C.L.A., could not be separated at the finish. So...a dead-heat in world-record time.

In the sixty-yard dash, Steve Riddick, if Philadelphia Pioneers, clocked a meet record of six point one six seconds in beating clubmate Greg Moore, and Houston McTear of Muhammed Ali T.C. Riddick ran anchor in the United States gold-medal four-hundred metres relay team in the Montreal Olympics.

Pole vault...and Tully clears seventeen feet at his second attempt. Tully was competing again after a six-months rest. Later, he and winner Olson both failed three tries to clear seventeen feet four inches. Three vaulters tied for third place at sixteen feet six inches.

In the mile, always a glamour event, Waigwa was defending the title he won last year. In this final lap, Waigwa, wearing number fifty, was depending on his renowned finishing spurt to get him home ahead of Suleiman Nyambui, wearing forty-nine. He did so, wining in four minutes and a tenth of a second from Nyambui, with South African Sydney Maree third. Waigwa had let Nyambui set an early pace before taking the lead after two laps.
