    Mr. Esiaku Sato was voted back for a further two-year-term as Prime Minister of Japan at his party's convention in tokyo yesterday (Thursday, 29 October). It will be his fourth term of office. By the end of this year, he will be Japan's longest serving Prime Minister.

    The election was for the President of the ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party. The leader of the majority party is normally the Prime Minister. Mr. Sato's main opponent for the party leadership was his former Foreign Minister, Mr. Takeo Miki. In his campaign he said that it was time for a change of leadership and for a change of attitude towards China. He was defeated. Mr. Sato got 353 votes, Mr. Miki III. Mr. Sato's re-election is seen by political observers as a vote of confidence in his administration and mandate for the preservation of the status quo in Japan.
