  • Description

MALAY RECRUITS FOR INTAKE INTO A SINGAPORE MILITIA FORCE RIOTED ON TUESDAY (1 FEBRUARY) AT AN ARMY TRAINING DEPOT NEAR THE CITY WATERFRONT. THE RECRUITS ARE TO REPLACE THE 430 MALAYSIAN SOLDIERS REMAINING IN THE SINGAPORE ARMY SINCE THE ISLAND STATE LEFT THE MALAYSIAN FEDERATION LAST YEAR.

IN THE LONG-HOUR FIGHT, FIFTEEN PEOPLE WERE INJURED, TWO OF THEM POLICEMEN.

THE FIGHT BEGAN WHEN AN ARMY MAJOR ORDERED 460 RECRUITS IN THE DEPOT TO BE SEPARATED INTO RACIAL GROUPS -- CHINESE, MALAYS AND INDIANS -- INSTEAD OF AS SINGAPORE CITIZENS AND NON-CITIZENS. THIS LED THE MALAYS INTO BELIEVING THAT THEY WERE TO BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST.

TEMPERS QUICKLY FLARED....MALAY RINGLEADERS HANDED OUT BOTTLES, WOODEN POLES AND STICKS TO BE THROWN INTO THE DEPOT'S CANTEEN WHICH WAS BADLY WRECKED.

AT THE TIME OF THE RIOT, THE CHINESE AND INDIAN RECRUITS LEFT THE SCENE...THEY WERE NOT INVOLVED. THE RIOTERS ALSO DAMAGED A VAN, SMASHING ITS WINDSHIELDS. TWO MOTOR-CYCLES WERE SET ABLAZE AND A SCOOTER WAS DAMAGED.

RIOT POLICE DASHED TO THE SCENE AND THREW TEARGAS BOMBS TO DISPERSE THE RIOTERS. MORE THAN 300 RIOTERS WERE ROUNDED-UP AND TAKEN AWAY BY POLICE TO THE NEARBY CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION HEADQUARTERS FOR QUESTIONING.

THE SINGAPORE PRIME MINISTER, LEE KUAN YEW, AND THE DEFENCE MINISTER, GOH KENG SWEE, HURRIED TO THE HEADQUARTERS FOR A COMPLETE BRIEFING ON THE INCIDENT.

LATER THE DETAINED RIOTERS WERE SENT HOME IN SMALL GROUPS, BUT THE RINGLEADERS WERE HELD CHARGED IN COURT ON WEDNESDAY.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON TUESDAY, MR. LEE SAID THE MEN INVOLVED WERE ON THE POINT OF BEING ACCEPTED INTO THE DEFENCE CORPS. HE PINNED THE CAUSE OF THE RIOTS TO MISINTERPRETATION OF ORDERS BY THE MAJOR.

ON WEDNESDAY THE MALAYS WENT BACK PEACEFULLY TO THE DEPOT TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE MILITIA FORCE. THEY WERE ORDERLY AND QUIET - LINING UP IN GROUPS OF ABOUT THIRTY TO FILE INTO THE DEPOT TO SIGN SERVICE DOCUMENTS AND TO RECEIVE THEIR UNIFORMS.
