  • Description

POPE PAUL'S RE-ENACTMENT OF THE VIA CRUCIS AT ROME'S COLOSSEUM LAST NIGHT WAS ATTENDED BY AN ESTIMATED 50-THOUSAND PEOPLE. IT WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST RELIGIOUS MANIFESTATIONS HELD THERE IN RECENT YEARS.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS CEREMONY STARTED AT THE COLOSSEUM, THE ROMAN AMPHITHEATRE WHERE EARLY CHRISTIANS WERE MARTYRED AND CONTINUED TO THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE AND THE PALATINE HILL. POWERFUL FLOODLIGHTS AND FLICKERING OIL LAMPS ILLUMINATED THE ROUTE AS THE POPE MOVED SLOWLY THROUGH THE 14 STATIONS, EACH MARKED BY WHITE-ROBED MEMBERS OF THE TARSICAN FRATERNITY HOLDING CROSSES.

AT THE 12TH STAGE POPE PAUL TOOK UP A CROSS HIMSELF AND CARRIED IT ALOFT THROUGH THE LAST TWO STAGES TO THE ALTAR WHICH MARKED THE END OF THE VIA CRUCIS.
