  • Description

AUSTRALIAN TENNIS STAR ROY EMERSON TODAY (SATURDAY) ENHANCED HIS REPUTATION WITH A GREAT WIN OVER FELLOW-COUNTRYMAN TONY ROCHE TO TAKE THE FRENCH MEN'S SINGLES TITLE. SUCCESS AT WIMBLEDON AND FOREST HILLS WOULD GIVE EMERSON A GRAND SLAM OF THE FOUR MAIN TITLES.

EMERSON PRODUCED A FINE DISPLAY OF AGGRESSIVE TENNIS IN FIERCE HEAT ON THE CENTRE COURT OF THE STAD ROLAND GARROS.

HE HAD WON THE FIRST SET 6 1 ALMOST BEFORE HIS YOUNGER OPPONENT HAD GOT INTO HIS STRIDE. BUT HE MET MORE OPPOSITION IN THE SECOND WHICH HE WON 6-4.

IN THE THIRD SET EMERSON SHOWED SOME SIGNS OF TIRING AND LOST A LITTLE OF HIS EDGE. ROCHE FURTHER DISCONNECTED HIM WITH SOME HIGH LOBBING, AND WON HIS ONLY SET OF THE MATCH.

AFTER THE INTERVAL, EMERSON CAME BACK STRONGLY AND RACED AHEAD TO 5-0 FOR THE LOSS OF ONLY SEVEN POINTS.

THEN ROCHE BROKE HIS SERVICE AND HELD ON UNTIL THE SCORE WAS 5-2 BEFORE BEING ONCE MORE BRUSHED ASIDE AS HIS POWERFUL OPPONENT MADE CERTAIN OF VICTORY.
