Background: Nearly 200 parliamentarians supported a call for early general elections in Turkey on Thursday (29 March), as the country continued its search for a new head of state.

Parliament, meeting in Ankara, has been deadlocked for more than two weeks over the selection of a president to succeed Mr. Cevdet Sunay, whose seven-year term ended on Wednesday.

Mr. Sunay, who is 73, handed over his office to Mr. Tekin Ariburun, who, as Senate Speaker, will be acting President until a new Head of State is chosen.

Air Force jets flew past in a farewell salute to Mr. Sunay as the presidential flag was hauled down and presented to the former president.

Mr. Sunay, in his farewell address, said he had done his best for Turkey, and he was happy Parliament had rejected proposals to extend his term of office and to hold a fresh election in 1975.

Parliament, in its search for a new president, has refused to how to Army pressure to elect the military candidate, General Faruk Gurler. In a ballot, General Gurler polled 81 votes -- far short of the 318 votes needed.
