Background: Cyprus today (Friday) has been comparatively calm apart from a brief outburst of firing near Kyrenia in which two men were wounded. This was in marked contrast to the fierce fighting yesterday round the village of Ghaziveran when eight people were killed.

Our camera teams in Cyprus sent back these reports of the situation there yesterday. In the capital, Nicosia, the Canadian troops of the United Nations peace corps took their first look at the town and the British-manned "green line" separating the two sides.

But for the British troops in Cyprus there is no relaxation. This village, Ayios Epiphanios is about 8 miles (13 kilometres) south of Ghaziveran. There had been fighting around the village but when the troops went in it was burning and deserted. They searched the village to make sure there were no wounded and then did what they could to put out the fire.

The fighting yesterday was centred around Ghaziveran. It started in the morning when Cypriot Government forces surrounded the Turkish village. After hours of shooting journalists were allowed to enter the village watched by heavily armed Greek soldiers. Inside the village women and children were sheltering in the school.

It was these roadblocks, that the Cyprus Government blamed for the fighting. They said the Turkish-Cypriots had refused to take them down.

After more fighting a cease-fire was arranged. The roadblocks were taken down and British soldiers came into the village. The women and children left the school and trickled back to their homes. But for some there was no welcome - eight people had been killed in the fighting - six of them Turkish-Cypriots.

Now British troops are ensuring freedom of movement in Ghaziveran. The Canadian troops have yet to receive their terms of reference from the United Nations and at present the peace-keeping task is still entirely in the hands of the British troops.
