VISNEWS cameraman Neil Davis, like other newsmen based in Phnom Penh, has come to expect the unexpected. So, when on Saturday, a sudden outbreak of gunfire could be heard in the city, he expected it to be the result of guerrilla activity. He was quickly on the scene of the action and began filming. It wasn't until some time later, when he'd moved to another city location that the picture became clear. The "fighting" had been between South Vietnamese troops and Cambodish troops, possibly men born and raised in South Vietnam. What triggered off the action is not known, but at least one person was killed and 14 injured. The situation was tense for several hours before life in the city, which is used to sudden outbreaks of violence, began to return to normal.
