    The leader of the Gabonese Republic, President Omar Bongo, held talks with the French President Georges Pompidou in Paris on Thursday (14 February). They discussed new agreement between their countries.

    The talks between the two heads of state were held at the Elysee Palace, during President Bongo's ten-day visit to France.

    The new co-operation agreements were signed on Tuesday (12 February). The covered French imports of Gabonese oil and -- in effect -- meant that France would pay the Gabonese asking price for uranium, in return for greater supplies of oil.

    France is not chort of uranium and the French Atomic Energy Authority and other French consortia mine most of the Gabonese Republic's deposits.

    but despite a preferred status with the Arab countries, France is still short of oil.

    The agreements also provided for a small contingent of French troops to be maintained int he Gabonese Republic.

    The talks between Presidents Bongo and Pompidou ended without an official statement.

    The Gabonese President was expected to leave France a few days later.
