Background: In Spain, Palestine Liberation Organisation (P.L.O) leader Yasser Arafat is making his first formal visit to a Western European country and holding a busy round of meetings with Spanish politicians following his arrival on Thursday (13 September). Spain has not formally recognised the P.L.O. but has regularly supported the organisation in the United Nations. Spain is also the only country in Western Europe which does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
SYNOPSIS: Yasser Arafat's plane landed in the military zone of Madrid airport amid heavy security precautions. Spanish Foreign Ministry officials, P.L.O. representatives and Arab Ambassadors were there to meet him. The P.L.O. chief is scheduled to stay in Madrid until Saturday (15 September) but his movements have been shrouded in secrecy. The Jewish community in Madrid has expressed its displeasure with the visit and is planning to stage a public protest.
Mr. Arafat had two hours of talks with Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez and Foreign Minister Marcelino Oreja on Thursday (13 September). He has also met with leaders of Spain's main opposition party, the Socialist Workers Party and Communist party leader Santiago Carrillo, who said mr. Arafat seemed very pleased with his talks with Mr. Suarez.
Mr. Arafat's visit to Spain is part of his drive to obtain international acceptance for the P.L.O. and follows informal meetings with Australian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky and former West German leader Willy Brandt. Yercham Meshel, Secretary General of Israel's Histadrut Trade Union Confederation is also in Madrid on a four-day visit to meet with leading socialist and Spanish trade unionists.
