    Background: ESSEN, WEST GERMANY

At an old synagogue in Essen, West Germany, which was burned by the Nazis and is now a memorial to the rise and effects of Nazi power, a discussion was held on January 24 to educate schoolchildren about Hitler's regime. The forum was opened by the North Rhine-Westphalian Minister of Culture, Jurgen Girgensohn, and a number of people who had witnessed the horrors of Nazism took part. Pictures of the synagogue before the burning and old pictures and newspapers were displayed at the discussion. All this was part of a nationwide programme to educate children about the anti-Jewish activities of the Third Reich. The programme marks the 50th anniversary of the beginnings of the Nazi movement in Germany. The following day (January 25) the West German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl called on his countrymen to support democracy with their hearts minds to prevent any return to the tragedy of Nazi rule. He said the memory of Hitler's rule should be preserved and passed on to future generations so that they would learn not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
