  • Description

One of the two United States diplomats expelled from Havana by the Cuban Government June 16, boarded a plane and left the island for Key West, Florida, June 17. He was Edwin L. Sweet who, along with William G.Friedeman, is alleged to have plotted the overthrow of the Castro government with a group of counter revolutionaries.

They were arrested by the police when "trying to escape" with a band of Cubans after visiting a residential area of Havana. The two envoys claim the arrest was made after they left their car to see what was causing a commotion on a street corner.

While in custody the two men were questioned by Raoul Castro, brother of Cuba's Prime Minister. Before their expulsion the United States Ambassador tried to claim diplomatic immunity for them.

The United States June 19 ordered two Cuban consular officials to leave the country within 48 hours, and accused one of being a spy in the Miami, Florida, area. Dr. Berta Plai, one of the accused, was a cultural attache at the Cuban Consulate-General in New York. The other, Carolos Manuel Lazaro Felix Sanchez y Basquet, is described as an assistant to the Cuban Consul in Miami.
