The Japanese Parliament is considering issues thought vital to Prime Minister Eisaku Sato's political future...they're to include the ratification of a U.S.-Japan Agreement returning the strategic Pacific Island of Okinawa to Japanese control, after 26 years in American hands. Parliament will also consider Japan's relations with the People's Republic of China...on Mr. Sato's personal decision Japan is backing moves to protect the standing of Generalissimo Chiang-Kai Shek's regime in Taiwan....a stand which has infuriated opposition parties, as well as a vocal pro-China lobby in his own ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

SYNOPSIS: The Diet in Tokyo where police stood guard on Saturday as the Japanese Parliament convened for an extraordinary and crucial session. The Parliament was called to consider several issues thought vital to Prime Minister Sato's political future.... they included the ratification of a U.S. Japan Agreement on the return of Okinawa Island to Japanese control, and the consideration of Japan's relations with the People's Republic of China.

Thousands of left-wing students and demonstrators began to mass in protest in nearby parks and streets. Many were angry that Mr. Sato had, on his own decision, decided Japan should back moves to protect the status of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek's regime in Taiwan...a stand which has also infuriated opposition parties and a vocal pro-China lobby in Mr. Sato's own ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

Although police armoured vehicles and water cannon were brought onto the streets the demonstration was described as noisy but mainly peaceful.
