Background: VISNEWS May 13 filmed the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester on arrival at the tiny airport of Kaduna, capital of Northern Nigeria. They were greeted by the Governor, Sir Gawain Bell, and his wife, who presented the Northern Nigerian Premier Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto, and other Nigerian leaders.
After inspecting a guard of honour the Royal couple drove the six miles from the airport to Government House. Their route was lined with a kaleidoscope of dazzlingly dressed chieftains mounted on camels and horses. Near naked natives whirled in impromptu roadside dances of greeting.
The Duke and Duchess represented Her Majesty the Queen during Northern Nigeria's week of self-government celebration. Their last visit was seventeen years ago.
10,000 people trekked to Kaduna to take part in a Durban held (May 15th) as a climax to a week of national rejoicing.
