  • Description

SCUFFLES BROKE OUT BETWEEN POLICE AND DEMONSTRATING AFRICAN STUDENTS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AT A NOISY GRADUATION CEREMONY OF THE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF RHODESIA, IN SALISBURY. NO ONE WAS INJURED BUT ONE WHITE HISTORY STUDENT WAS ARRESTED LATER FOR SCUFFLING WITH POLICE.

POLICE REINFORCEMENTS WERE CALLED IN TO AID THOSE ALREADY ON ROUTINE PARKING PATROL AT A HUGE OUTDOOR AMPHITHEATRE WHERE THE GRADUATION CEREMONY WAS BEING HELD.

TWO MINISTERS OF THE SMITH REGIME ARRIVED TO BE MET BY A WALL OF STUDENT CARRYING PLACARDS AND VOICING THEIR PROTESTS. THEIR OPPOSITION WAS SO EFFECTIVE THAT THE STUDENT FORCE THE CAR TO REVERSE.

THEY OBJECTED TO PRESENCE OF NOT ONLY THE MINISTER OF FINANCE, MR. JOHN WRATHALL, AND THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION, MR. ARTHUR SMITH, BUT ALSO THE PRINCIPAL OF CAPE TOWN UNIVERSITY. DR. J. P. DUMINY.

THE MINISTERIAL CAR MADE ANOTHER APPROACH AND THIS TIME SUCCEEDED IN GETTING THROUGH A CROWD OF ABOUT FIFTY DEMONSTRATORS WITH POLICE CLEARING A PATH.

THE DEMONSTRATING AFRICAN STUDENTS STOPPED THE CEREMONY SEVERAL TIMES BY SHOUTING BUT POLICE FINALLY CORDONED THEM OFF AND THEY LEFT IN A GROUP.

THE WHITE STUDENT ARRESTED HAS BEEN RELEASED ON BAIL AND WILL APPEAR IN COURT SHORTLY.
