    IN HELSINKI LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY), BRITISH COMPOSER BENJAMIN BRITTEN, WAS AWARDED ONE OF TWO SIBELIUS PRIZES, WORTH GBP9,000.

    THE SECOND AWARD ANNOUNCED ON SEPTEMBER 13 THIS YEAR BY THE SIBELIUS FOUNDATION, WAS DIVIDED BETWEEN THREE FINNISH COMPOSERS.

    THE PRESENTATION TO MR. BRITTEN WAS MADE IN HELSINKI'S UNIVERSITY HALL.

    IT WAS THE LATEST HONOUR BESTOWED ON A COMPOSER WHO IS ACKNOWLEDGE AS ONE OF BRITAIN'S GREATEST.

    MRS. RAKEL WIHURI, CHAIRMAN OF THE WIHURI FOUNDATION HANDED THE AWARD TO MR. BRITTEN, WHO THEN TOOK THE BATON AND CONDUCTED THE HELSINKI TOWN ORCHESTRA.

    BORN AT LOWESTOFT, ENGLAND, IN 1913, MR. BRITTEN WAS EDUCATED AT SOUTH LODGE PREPARATORY AND GRESHAM'S SCHOOL, STUDYING AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC IN LONDON.

    THE HANSEATIC GOETHE PRIZE FOR 1961, AND THE ASPEN AWARD (COLORADO, USA, 1964), ARE NUMBERED AMONG THE MANY AWARDS GATHERED OVER THE YEARS BY THE MINENT COMPOSER, WHO LISTS BIRD-WATCHING AMONG HIS RECREATIONS OUTSIDE THE WORLD OF MUSIC.
