    Kjell Isaksson of Sweden raised the world indoor pole vault record to 17 ft 7 3/4 ins -- 5.32 metres -- during the Los Angeles Times Indoor Games on Friday night (12 Feb). The 22-year-old Swede's world best came on his first try at the height. He made three attempts at 18 ft 0 1/2 ins -- 5.5 metres -- but was not close with any of them.

    Isaksson, who recently enrolled at the Southern California University, is one of the small at vaulters in the world at 5 ft 8 ins -- 1.54 metres.
