  • Description

The impressive new NATO Headquarters building in Paris is now ready for occupation. Situated near the Are de Triomphe at the Porte Dauphine, and overlooking the Bois de Boulogne, NATO's new home is shaped like a giant "A", its two long wings converging to a point. It was designed by French architect, Jacques Carlu, and replaces the old temporary headquarters in the Palais de Chaillot - originally built for the 1951 Paris session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Begun at the end of 1955, the building contains 1,000 offices, one large Assembly Hall, a number of Committee Rooms and a large Press Room, The construction was a joint enterprise - France was responsible for the heavy structural work. Fittings and materials were supplied by nine other NATO nations.
