Background: Although most of the shooting seems to be over in Jordan's bitter civil war, the Palestinian guerrillas are still in occupation at Irbid--on Saturday (October 3) life was carrying on under their direction.

Jordan army tanks, which had encircled Irbid, have pulled back into the hills of northern Jordan.

Today, Monday 5 October, guerrilla sources were claiming that the Jordanian Army was shelling the village of Harimah, about eight miles from Irbid. There was also a report of fighting between Jordan army troops and guerrillas on the outskirts of that village.

In Irbid itself, the guerrillas, who are strongly entrenched, were today said to be showing no eagerness to give up the city to the army.

Irbid, Jordan's northern provincial capital, has a population of about 80,000 people.

SYNOPSIS: In Irbid, the northern Jordan provincial capital, life is returning to normal--but with the Palestinian guerrillas still in control of the city.

Barricades still block some of the streets and cars are checked for arms.

The guerrillas, who are strongly entrenched in Irbid, are showing no eagerness to hand the city of 80,000 people over to the Jordanian army. Instead they are concentrating on seeing that the essential services are operating. They supervise the distribution of water and other rations.

The de la Sale School in Irbid, turned into a hospital during the recent fighting, still has thirty nine patients. Another 160 were treated here and discharged.

An agreement now being worked out between King Hussein and the guerrilla leaders is expected to call for the withdrawal of the guerrillas from Irbid to the Palestinian camps in west Jordan.
