  • Description

Thousands of Syrian workers gathered in Aleppo, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the capital, Damascus, on Saturday (1 May) for the annual May Day celebrations.

It's the first time the event has been held in Aleppo and the crowd was entertained with displays of folk dancing, mock sword battles and parades by men and women from the Syrian army.

And while dancing in the streets continued in Aleppo, Syria continued its effort to restore peace in Lebanon. Syria has now sent an estimated 10,000 troops into Lebanon, and has posted at least 40 tanks on the Lebanese side of the border.

This military action has been continued, despite a request by leftist parties in Lebanon for Syria to withdraw its forces. Syria has admitted pressing for the election of Central Bank governor, Elias Sarkis, as successor to President Suleiman Franjieh, although most Lebanese left-wing parties are opposed to Mr. Sarkis' nomination.
