  • Description

This first film from Peru taken on Friday (29 August the day of the successful bloodless coup against President Juan Velasco Alvarado, shows the situation normal in Lima.

The film was shot on the actual day of the coup but despite the drama, the streets were full of crowds and people going about their normal business.

President Velasco was ousted by his Prime Minister, General Francisco Morales Bormudez. he is also the head of the Army.

He accused the ex-President of developing a cult of personality and deviating form the spirit of the Porufian Revolution. There were no reports of fighting or other opposition to the coup.

The situation did not disturb the fifth Ministerial Conference of Non-Aligned states which continued with its scheduled programme until sunday (31 August) when the conference ended.

In the final session the non- aligned states adopted a wide ranging programme containing strong criticism of United States imperialism, colonialism and policies.

The 82 member conference, representing over half the world's population and a substantial majority of United Nations votes, did not recommend expelling Israel from the U.N. or suspending its General Assembly delegation.
