  • Description

More than 4,000 people attended a mass left wing rally in the northern Portuguese city of Opporto on Saturday (31 January) to protest against what they describe as an "offensive against the working class" by the Government.

The rally was backed by Opporto's Communist Party, the City's Neighbourhood Council and most trade unions.

Speakers at the rally attacked the Government over the increases in the country's cost of living, the wage freeze and factory owners "sabotaging" the workers.

A motion calling for a delegation to go to Lisbon and hand a petition to President Coast Gomes asking an end to the "offensive" was passed by a huge majority.

Trade Union leaders at the rally called for people to unite and fight fascists and struggle against oppression.
