  • Description

Motorcyclists all over France took to the roads in massive convoys last weekend (29 September) in protest against a proposed government motorcycle tax. Their demonstration was timed to coincide with the opening at Porte De Versailles of the Sixty-Sixth Cycle and Motorcycle Fair and also with France's National Motorcycle Day.

SYNOPSIS: The streets of Paris echoed with the roar of motorcycle engines on Saturday (29 September), as hundreds of riders drove around in packs. Bikes of all sizes and descriptions joined the protest `drive-in', which had, in the words of one motoring association, been organised to express "the general discontent of motorcycle users". The demonstration was also intended as a snub to French Minister for Youth, Sport and Leisure, Monsieur Jean-Pierre Soisson, who had declared Saturday "National Motorcycle Day".

Angering the demonstrators was the prospect of a new tax or vignette - on two-wheeled machines. Although behaving peacefully, the protesters did block a number of streets for meetings and protest rallies. Their day of action marked the beginning of a lobbying campaign in an attempt to make French MP's block the new tax.

Some of the demonstrators were accompanied while others preferred to register their protest alone.
