    THE VISIT WAS MARRED AND RELATIONS BETWEEN PARIS AND BONN SHAKEN WHEN A WEST GERMAN NEWS AGENCY REPORTER HERR BRANDT AS DESCRIBING PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AS BEING UN-EUROPEAN AND A MAN OBSESSED WITH POWER. THE AGENCY TODAY WITHDREW THE REPORT, SAYING THERE WAS NO DOUBT THAT HERR BRANDT HAD NOT UTTERED THE OFFENDING WORDS.

    BUT DESPITE DENIALS IN BONN AND THE RETRACTION OF THE REPORT, THE FRENCH LEADER SLASHED THE GUEST LIST FOR A LUNCHEON AT THE ELYSEE PALACE TODAY IN HOUR OF PRESIDENT LUEBKE.

    THERE WAS NO EXPLANATION OF WHY THE LUNCHEON WAS REDUCED FROM A FORMAL OCCASION TO A RELATIVELY INTIMATE MEAL WITH ONLY CLOSE ADVISERS PRESENT.

    BUT GENERAL DE GAULLE WENT OUT OF HIS WAY TO DEMONSTRATE HIS REGARD FOR PRESIDENT LUEBKE HANDS WARMLY WITH HIM WHEN HE ARRIVED FOR THE LUNCHEON.
