Dr. George Habash, Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), has advocated a popular front was against Israel.
The Palestinian guerrilla leader was speaking at a march held in Beirut on Friday (16 March) in tribute to three PFLP gunmen who were killed by the Israelis in the Gaza Strip last week.
Dr. Habash told the marchers, who were accompanied by armed commandos: "The strategy of the popular liberation war, which has proved effective in Vietnam, will also prove effective on Palestinian territory." He also attacked Jordan, and called for "the destruction of the regime there."
The three gunmen were cornered by Israeli troops in a hideout beneath a doctor's house on 9 March. Two of them were killed in the ensuing gunbattle, and the third man died later in hospital. The leader of the group, Muhammad al Assoud, has been on the Israelis' wanted list for three years.
The wounded guerrilla is said to have told the Israelis before he died that the group had been responsible for assassinating several local Arab politicians and killing an Israeli soldier in an ambush.
