  • Description

Poland's new leader, Mr Edward Gierak, appealed to the nation in a New Year's Eve broadcast to work better in order to live better.

Mr Gierak, appointed Communist party first secretary in a leadership purge following food price-riots earlier this month, said hope was growing in people's hearts after the experiences and events of recent weeks.

"We have taken the first decisions towards meeting the most burning social needs. We still have much more to do."
"Above all we must accelerate the dynamic of the development of our economy and raise the efficiency of its organisation."
It was Mr Gierak's third major speech since he took over the party leadership from Mr. Gomulka on December 20th.

The new leader has promised to remedy economic policy errors which contributed to industrial unrest in Poland. The 57-year-old former coal miner said strenuous work awaited everyone in 1971.
