  • Description

The old sport of pole was introduced to Argentina only one hundred years ago but during that time Argentina has become one of the world's top polo countries.

When the game was first played in Argentina it was called "the pastime of the mad Englishmen." But soon Argentines developed a knack for the new sport and by 1922 it has earned the label of the best polo country in the world.... a title it has never really lost.

For it was in that year that the Argentine team won the Open Polo championships, both in the United States and Britain.

In 1936 the Argentine polo them took the gold medal in the berlin Olympics.

Argentina is the only country in the world that can field two teams of the maximum 40-handicap calibre.

It was these two teams which put on a game in Buenos Aires on Saturday. Polo is a sport which depends largely on the quality of the horses ridden and polo ponies from Argentina are sought all over the world.

Most of the top horses were developed by breeding hardy Argentine stock horses with champion race horses.

The result is a fast, strong, elastic, docile and intelligent animal which fetches high prices overseas.

The polo stadium in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, where a large crowed gathered on Saturday, including the former Argentine President. General Alexandro Lanasse. The reason for such a large crowd was that it was a special game of the introduction of the game to Argentina. The first game was played in the Province of Buenos Aires.

Since then the game has advanced to the point where Argentina has become one off the top polo countries in the world. In fact, according to the Buenos Aires Herald newspaper, the game of polo has advanced further in the past one hundred years than Argentina itself. It was in the early nineteen twenties that Argentina became a force to be reckoned with in international polo when it won both the British and United States Open Championship.

Argentina is the only country in the world that can raise tow teams with a maximum forty-handicap, the top rating of a polo team. These are the two sides playing here. Most other countries have trouble raising even one team of such standard.

Every year Argentine polo players are sought after to play for teams throughout Europe-and it is not only the players who are sought after. Argentine polo ponies fetch huge prices on the international market. Most of the ponies come form a strain developed by cross breeding hardy Argentine stock horses with champion thoroughbred race horses. This has resulted in a fast strong, elastic, docile and intelligent animal for which breeders of polo ponies throughout the world, particularly in Europe, will pay high prices.

With players and horses such as these it appears that Argentina's long dominance of the sport of polo....will probably continue for another one hundred years.
