  • Description

In Zambia two Commonwealth leaders -- Singapore's Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, and Grenada's Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop -- on Sunday (5 August) visited Victory Camp -- a refugee settlement which is home for thousands of supporters of Patriotic Front Leader, Joshua Nkomo. Mr. Lee and Mr. Bishop have been in Lusaka to attend the Commonwealth Conference and work out a solution to the Zimbabwe Rhodesian issue of lifting sanctions against the rebel British colony.
SYNOPSIS: Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and his colleague at the Commonwealth Conference, Mr. Bishop of Grenada were not the only party to visit Victory Camp. Patriotic Front Leader Joshua Nkomo had urged all delegates -- including Britain's Mrs. Margaret Thatcher to visit the refugees camp, just twenty miles (32 kilometres) from Lusaka.
Mr. Lee and Mr. Bishop were shown around t he camp by senior Zimbabwe African people's Union (ZAPU) officials. Mr. Lee, in an address to the summit, said he hoped that a lasting solution to the Zimbabwe-Rhodesian issue would be found during t h conference.
Mr. Nkomo has so far not been optimistic about the proposed talks to be held in London later this year, in an effort to construct a new Zimbabwe Rhodesian constitution. But for the inhabitants of Victory Camp the talks offer some hope for the future.
