  • Description

Rice harvesting prospects in Andhra Pradesh in South India, have been improved following completion of Nagarjunasagar Dam. The dam has opened up irrigation facilities for 650,000 additional acres of land in the province.

The dam, built across the River Krishna 100 miles from Hyderabad has brought with it renewed hopes of prosperity for farmers in its immediate vicinity.

Already farmers in the dam's catchment area are busy transplanting paddy and fertilising land - they expect a record yield. Recent monsoon reports have also indicated good crops.

The surplus of rice in the province is expected to be increased to more than 1,000,000 tons. Much of the excess rice will be offered to deficit states.
