Cricket....and in Bridgetown, Barbados, the West Indies gained a commanding position at the end of the second day (Saturday 18 March) in the second test against the touring Australians. The West Indies, who decisively won the first test, had a lead of 38 runs on the first innings. They then set about destroying the top of the Australian batting order, and claimed five of the tourists' second innings wickets for just 96 runs.

SYNOPSIS: West Indian batsman, Austin, made a confident start but was then caught in the gully by Sergeant off Clark for 20.

But David Murray gave Clark harsher treatment....a hook and four runs. Murray, the West Indian wicketkeeper, was the second-highest scorer for his team with 60 runs.

West Indies still had four wickets in hand when they reached the Australian first-innings total of 250. But Thomson soon had Roberts out l.b.w. for four runs.

The Australian fast bowler also had Croft trapped leg before wicket. Thomson ended with bowling figures of six wickets for 77 runs.

Australia began their second turn at the crease confidently, with Darling scoring a single off Croft.

The other Australian opener, Woods, showed aggression and hooked Croft to the boundary on this occasion.

Darling was the first to go. Caught behind off the bowling of Croft for 8.

The West Indies pace attack, which bowled many bouncers without check from the umpires, was faced up to by Graham Yallop, wearing a crash helmet and visor. The unconventional protective headgear did seem to give the Australian batsmen confidence in his task. But despite scoring off this full toss from Croft, Yallop was out soon after for 14.

Garner to Woods, the best of the touring batsmen on the day. He finished the session not out on 55, while a further three wickets fell at the other end.
