  • Description

CZECHOSLOVAKIANS DEMONSTRATED IN PRAGUE STREETS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) DEMANDING AN ASSURANCE THAT THERE WOULD BE NO COMPROMISE ON THE MOSCOW AGREEMENTS.

AND AT THE SAME TIME THE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, MR. SMRKOVSKY, APPEALED TO CZECHS TO STAY AWAY FROM THE DEMONSTRATIONS, SAYING THAT THEY COULD WELL END TRAGICALLY. BUT THE DEMONSTRATIONS WENT ON, IN AND AROUND WENCESLAS SQUARE, WHERE HUNDREDS OF CZECHS DESTROYED LEAFLETS LEFT BY THE SOVIETS, AND THEN LISTENED ON TRANSISTOR RADIOS WHILE MR. SMRKOVSKY MADE HIS APPEAL.

LATER A BIG CROWD GATHERED OUTSIDE THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE, TO CHEER AS THE CZECH LEADERS MOVED OUT. THEN THERE WAS A MARCH ON WENCESLAS SQUARE, WHERE YOUNG CZECHS WORKED TO CLEAN ANTI-SOVIET SLOGANS FROM THE STATUE OF KING WENCESLAS AND SURROUNDING BUILDINGS.
