  • Description

Twelve black people died and 174 were injured, when a goods train ploughed into the back of a passenger train near Vereeniging in South Africa on Saturday (3 December). No white people were reported killed, but two white crewmen and a white passenger, were injured in the crash.

SYNOPSIS: The crash occurred 30 miles (50 kilometres) south of Johannesburg.

Five coaches for black passengers at the back of the train were hurled off the track, when the goods train smashed into them. The passenger train, which had been travelling from Johannesburg to Vereeniging was standing at Kreiground Station, north west of Vereenigning, when the collision took place. First reports on casualties were confused, as nurses and ambulancemen sifted through the wreckage. At one time it was thought that 14 people had died. The mangled wreckage made it difficult for rescue workers. There was no shortage of helpers, but with bucked coaches blocking the track, progress was slow.

Rescuers came to the scene of the crash from a wide area, and ambulances were sent from as far away as Johannesburg. Of those taken to hospital, 40 black passengers and a white casualty were discharged after treatment. Ten other injured blacks, however, were described as being in a serious condition.
