  • Description

The Israeli Defence Ministry on Friday at a secret army camp put on show to the world's press some of its most recently acquired weapons. Most of them were American-supplied, but there was also a captured Russian rocket launcher.

Israel's chief concern in the weapons field in recent months has been to maintain her balance of striking power in relation to Egypt, especially in the air. On April 20 there were press reports that Israel had taken delivery from the United states of 12 more F-4 Phantom bombers, and she is reported to have received 80 of these fighters now in the past three years. By contrast nearly 200 Soviet fighters are reported supplied to Egypt this year, including MIG-23, the fastest and best jet fighter in the Soviet arsenal.

Recent Soviet deliveries of weapons to Egypt were undoubtedly a part of discussions in Washington a few days ago between U.S. Secretary of State William Rogers and Israel's deputy Prime Minister Yigal Allon.

Maximum firing range of its 155mm gun is 9 miles or (4.6 kms), and it can traverse through 360 degrees. Its rate of fire is impressive - 4 shells per minute for the first three minutes, and one shell per minute on prolonged firing.
