  • Description

TANZANIA WAS DESCRIBED AS HAVING MOVED CLOSER TOWARDS INDUSTRIAL AND AGRICULTURAL SELF-RELIANCE ON TUESDAY (31 MARCH) WHEN PRESIDENT NYERERE OPENED THE TANZANIA BAG CORPORATION'S NEW HALF-MILLION-POUND STERLING FACTORY AND LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE EAST AFRICAN KENAF INDUSTRIES, LTD., SISAL PLANT IN MOSHI.

MR A.M. BABU, TANZANIA'S MINISTER FOR COMMERCE AND INDUSTRIES SPOKE AT THE OPENING CEREMONY FOR THE BAG FACTORY. THE FACTORY WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED BY PRESIDENT NYERERE WHEN HE CUT A TAPE. THE PRESIDENTIAL PARTY THEN TOURED THE PLANT.

MR BABU SAID IT WAS VITAL FOR TANZANIA THAT INDUSTRIAL GROWTH WAS RELATED TO AGRICULTURE. HE WENT ON TO SAY THAT SISAL PLANT AND THE BAG FACTORY WOULD EVENTUALLY CORRECT THE "IMBALANCE BETWEEN THE PEASANTS AND WORKERS."
THE FACTORY, A JOINT INVESTMENT PROJECT OF THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, THE TANGANYIKAN COFFEE CURING COMPANY, AND AN ITALIAN FIRM, IS NOW EFFECTIVELY A TANZANIAN CORPORATION.

THE NEW CORPORATION WILL BE CAPABLE OF MAKING SOME SIX MILLION AGRICULTURAL BAGS -- ONE-SIXTH OF THE COUNTRY'S TOTAL REQUIREMENTS -- AT THE END OF THE SECOND FIVE-YEAR DEVELOPMENT PLAN.

FOLLOWING THE TOUR OF THE BAG FACTORY, THE PRESIDENT THEN LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE KENAF CORPORATION'S FACTORY.

THE KENAF CORPORATION'S FACTORY WAS DESCRIBED BY MR BABU AS A UNIQUE PROJECT. BECAUSE TANZANIAN WOULD REQUIRE ABOUT TWENTY MILLION BAGS A YEAR BY THE END OF 1974, IT HAD BEEN DECIDED TO SEARCH FOR A CROP OTHER THAN SISAL TO PRODUCE THE COMMODITY. EXPERIMENTS HAD BEEN MADE WITH KENAF TO PRODUCE ANOTHER FIBRE SUITABLE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF BAGS FOR FUTURE REQUIREMENTS.
