An exclusive villa resort near the French town of Cannes, a luxury playground on the Mediterranean coast, has become the scene of a murder hunt following an attack by gunmen on the car of the Shah of Iran's twin sister, Princess Ashraf Pahlevi. The Princess escaped unhurt in the attack, but a woman companion was killed and the driver of the car and another passenger were injured.
SYNOPSIS: The Shah's sister has a luxury villa in Juan-les-Pins, not far from the casinos of Cannes where she frequently enjoys gambling. Tuesday's (13 September) attack came on as she was on her way home from a night's gaming on the roulette tables.
The Frenchwoman who died in the ambush was named as Madame Genevieve Fouroux, whose sister was staying at the Princes's villa with her two children. The murder victim's family were seen leaving the villa the morning after the attack, but it was not known where they were going. Madame Fouroux died almost instantly in the ambush, at about half past nine in the morning.
The 57-year old Princess is well-known in the luxury resorts of Europe, combining her work as a close adviser to the Shah with a hectic social life. The attack came when a group of gunmen in a stolen car forced her Rolls Royce off the road. Two men stepped out and fired seven bullets into her car. One of the bullets killed Madame Fouroux in the seat normally used by the Princess.
Police said they did not have any immediate clues about the motives or identity of the gunmen, who escaped after the incident. While local detectives were investigating the incident, which follows the shooting and wounding of an Iranian diplomat in Paris, the French capital, last December, the gunmen's car was found abandoned in the nearby town of Antibes. The vehicle was damaged in the attack when the driver of the Princess's car deliberately rammed it.
