Congress Working Committee, the top Executive of the ruling party of India met in New Delhi today to discuss the policies being followed by the government in the recent months. There have been strong differences between the party and the government over some of the changes brought about by Mrs. Indira Gandhi and these reached their culmination over her announcement of the devaluation of the rupee. Some of hard core left wing socialists of the Congress have been charging Mrs. Gandhi as deviating from the policies of her late father Mr. Nehru and playing to the Western pressures in national policies. Reports have also been circulating of serious differences between her and the Congress President Mr. Kamaraj, the man who backed her for election to be the country's Prime Minister. However Mrs. Gandhi has all along hit hard at her critics. The Congress Working Committee meeting began on a very quiet note and Mrs. Indira Gandhi seemed to be carrying the majority of the Working Committee with her and had thus successfully met the challenge to her leadership of India. (All the top national leaders including Mr. Morarji Desai were present at the meeting of the Working Committee).
