  • Description

FOLLOWING THREE DAYS OF CONTINUOUS EARTH TREMOURS IN WESTERN INDIA, THE DEATH TOLL IN THE EARTHQUAKE-DEVASTATED KOYNA NAGAR AREA -- AT THE EPI CENTRE OF THE TREMOURS - STOOD LAST NIGHT (WEDNESDAY) AT 180, WITH ANOTHER 2,000 PEOPLE INJURED AND MORE THAN 10,000 LEFT HOMELESS. RESCUE WORKERS HAVE BEEN BRINGING AID TO THE SURVIVORS AS WELL AS DIGGING BODIES OUT OF THE RUBBLE OF HOUSES, WHILE ENGINEERS HAVE BEEN EXAMINING THE GIANT KOYNA DAM FOR SIGNS OF CRACKS - AND A POSSIBLE FURTHER DISASTER.

INDIAN SEISMOLOGISTS HAVE SUGGESTED THAT STRESSES CAUSED BY THE IMPOUNDING OF WATER IN THE 21-SQUARE-MILE (52.5 SQUARE KM) LAKE BEHIND THE KOYNA DAM MAY HAVE CAUSED THE EARTHQUAKES. A NUMBER OF SLIGHT TREMOURS HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCED - FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE REGION - SINCE THE RESERVOIR BEGAN TO BE FILLED IN 1961. SO FAR, THE EARTH TREMOURS DO NOT APPEAR TO HAVE CRACKED THE DAM.

THE WORST EARTHQUAKE CAME IN THE EARLY HOURS OF MONDAY MORNING, INDIAN TIME. THOSE WHO ESCAPED FROM THE COLLAPSING BUILDINGS FLED TO A NEARBY HILL TO HUDDLE IN THE COLD UNTIL DAWN. BUT SOME STAYED IN THE TOWN, WORKING IN THE DARK TO RESCUE NEIGHBOURS. MANY OF THE THOUSANDS OF HOMELESS PEOPLE FROM THE TOWN OF KOYNA NAGAR AND SURROUNDING VILLAGES ARE STILL CAMPING IN THE OPEN, AFRAID OF FURTHER EARTHQUAKES.

AMONG THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN SURVEYING THE DAMAGE TO KOYNA NAGAR IS THE BOMBAY REVENUE MINISTER, MR. D.S. DESIA, WHO ALSO HANDED OUT BLANKETS. HOWEVER RESCUE WORK HAS ONLY JUST STARTED IN MANY OF THE MORE REMOTE VILLAGES AND THE EVENTUAL DEATH TOLL IS EXPECTED TO BE MUCH HIGHER. IN THE VILLAGES SO FAR REACHED BY RESCUE TEAMS AT LEAST 10,000 HOMES HAVE BEEN FOUND DESTROYED OR DAMAGED BY THE EARTHQUAKES.
