  • Description

TURKISH CYPRIOTS YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TRIED TO STOP A UNITED NATIONS CONVOY UNLOADING FOOD FOR THE TURKISH VILLAGE OF KOKKINA.

SAYING THEY'D HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOD SUPPLIES FROM THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT, A GROUP OF VILLAGERS GATHERED AT A ROAD BLOCK ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF KOKKINA AND FORCIBLY TRIED TO PREVENT FINNISH TROOPS FROM UNLOADING.

BUT THE U.N. TROOPS, FOLLOWING A RADIOED ORDER FROM GENERAL THIMAYYA, U.N. PEACE FORCE COMMANDER, UNLOADED AT THE ROAD BLOCK AND THEIR CONVOY OF TRUCKS RETURNED TO NICOSIA EMPTY. THE FOOD SUPPLIES WERE LEFT AT THE ROADSIDE.

(PRESIDENT MAKARIOS YESTERDAY LIFTED THE ECONOMIC BLOCKADE ON TURKISH CYPRIOT COMMUNITIES IN A MOVE WHICH GREEK CYPRIOTS SAW AS CREATING THE BRIGHTEST PEACE PROSPECTS FOR THE PAST EIGHT MONTHS.)
(THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL IS TODAY EXPECTED TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE U.N. CYPRUS PEACE-KEEPING FORCE FOR A FURTHER THREE MONTHS.)
