  • Description

BRITAIN'S NAVY HAS DEVISED A NEW TECHNIQUE TO ENABLE HELICOPTERS TO LAND ON SMALL SHIPS.IT WAS DEMONSTRATED AT BEDFORD, ENGLAND, TODAY (WEDNESDAY) WITH THE AID OF A ROLLING PLATFORM.

THE PLATFORM ROCKED THROUGH AN ARC OF 30 DEGREES TO SIMULATE THE MOTION OF A SHIP ROLLING AND PITCHING IN A STORM.A HELICOPTER HOVERED OVER THE PLATFORM AND THEN MADE A PINPOINT LANDING.

HOW'S IT DONE? SPECIAL JOINTED LEGS FITTED TO THE HELICOPTER'S UNDERCARRIAGE GIVE IT EXTRA LANDING STABILITY, AND THE PLATFORM IS PAINTED WITH ANTI-SKID SOLUTION.

CHIEF USE OF THIS TECHNIQUE IS FOR ANTI-SUBMARINE OPERATIONS FROM SMALL CRAFT LIKE FRIGATES.TO MAKE LANDINGS AND TAKE-OFFS POSSIBLE IN VERY ROUGH WEATHER, THE HELICOPTERS WILL HAVE SUCTION CUPS INSTEAD OF WHEELS.
