SYNOPSIS: In the Asian Badminton Championships in Djakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday the ladies' finals was easily won by Indonesia's Utami Dewi -- wearing her hair in plaits. Playing what was described as a 'brilliant' match, she demolished her opponent, South Korea's Lim Yun-soon, in only 17 minutes, to win 11-5, 11-5.

The Men's finals were a little closer, but Malaysia's Tan Aik Mong still had an easy victory over left-handed Junji Honma of Japan. Taking command with a series of powerful smashes, mixed with delicate dropshots and accurate cross-court returns, he won 15-5, 15-10 -- but not before his opponent had levelled the second set at 10-all. After that, however, Tan raced away to victory -- and the winner's sash and trophy.
