  • Description

One of the Britain's leading light aircraft test pilots was killed at the Farnborough Air Show this afternoon (Friday). John Judge, for many years chief test pilot for Beagle Aircraft, was flying a single seater autogyro on the first public day.

At 200 feet (61 metres) the tiny aircraft was seen to flater in mid-flight. Horrified spectators watched as the little autogyro plummeted to the ground and disintegrated on impact. The pilot was killed instantly.

One explanation offered by eye-witnesses was that the rotor blades smashed into the tail of the machine.

The thousands of spectators were not told of the pilot's death until later, and the show went on as planned.
