  • Description

A gunman who tried to storm police headquarters in Santiago on Wednesday (16 June) shot and killed two policemen, seriously wounded another, and then blew himself up with explosives tied to his own body.

The man, later identified as Heriberto Salazar Pena, was the last survivor of a three-man terrorist group of leftwing extremists who last week shot dead former Vice-President Edmundo Perez Zujovic. Police said his apparent intention was to free five members of his extreme leftwing Popular Workers Vanguard (VOP), rounded up by police last week following a gunbattle in which the two other alleged assassins of Vice-President Zujovic died.

Just before the attack on the investigations headquarters, journalists attended a press conference where they were shown a photograph of one of the terrorists killed earlier in the gun battle.

SYNOPSIS: A gunman who tried to storm this police investigations headquarters building in Santiago on Wednesday, shot and killed two policemen, wounded another and then blasted himself to pieces with dynamite.

Police later identified the gunman as Heriberto Salazar, the last survivor of a three-man group of leftwing extremists who shot dead former Vice-President Edmundo Zujovic last week.

Police held a suspect, wounded in a gun battle following the attack, for questioning. The investigations headquarters was slightly damaged in the blast, and the remains of Salazar were still scattered around the rooms some time later. (PAUSE UNTIL CUE)
Just before the attack, journalists had attended a press conference to hear how two terrorists had died in a gun battle, the finale of a massive manhunt for the assassins of former Vice-President Edmundo Zujovic who was shot dead last week. Interior Minister Jose Toha had explained police moves to round up the assassins after the Vice-President's murder.

At another press conference, Government Minister Antonio Reveau had explained why his forces had rounded up members of the leftwing Popular Workers Vanguard. He showed a photograph of one of the dead terrorists, alleged to be the actual assassin of the former Vice-President.

Police later said that the attack on the investigations headquarters was an attempt at freeing suspects being held in connection with last week's assassination.
